毎年、妻の誕生日に椅子を作ってプレゼントしているのだが、思いがけずそのまま製品化できてしまえる物がうまれることがある。
なぜ思いがけずなのかと言うと、お客さんのためでもコンテストのためでも製品開発でもないから、なんのプレッシャーもなくただ楽しく新しい構造にチャレンジしているだけだから失敗作を作ってしまうことも多いからだ。
椅子に座ったままキッチンで料理をしたり本を読みながらビールを飲んだりする姿を想像しながら設計した。
座面の高さは600ミリ。
そこから400ミリ下に中板があるから普通の椅子と同じように座ることができる。
そして今回のチャレンジは、全て22ミリという薄い部材で4本の脚と座面、中板という最低限の部品数で構成することだ。
台輪やヌキといった脚と脚をつなぐ部品を使わずに、座面と中板も構造の一部として脚と直接組むことにした。
脚と座面は「蟻組」、中板とは「相欠き」で組むことで、台輪やヌキを用いる以上の強度が出せることに新たな発見を得た。
そして蟻組をあえて隠すことで蟻組のネックでもある経年のズレが解消できた。
何度も試行錯誤をした結果、新しい工夫が思いついた時はいつだって最高に嬉しい。
一つ一つの部材は至ってシンプルだが、小さなこだわりを重ねることで堂々とした佇まいを得ることができるのだ。
やっぱり「神は細部に宿る」とあらためて感じることができた。
Every year, I gift a new chair for my wife's birthday, and sometimes that chair unexpectedly become a product at KOMA. It's unexpected, because this chair is not for customers or for contests, and have no intention of developing new products, I challenge new structures with no pressure. Which often leads to a failure.
This time, I designed it with an image of my wife sitting on the chair while cooking or drinking beer with a book in her hand. I set the seat high at 600mm. The middle plate will be 400mm below that, so she could sit as she was on a normal chair. The biggest challenge was that every material used were thin as 22mm, and assembled with minimum parts which was four legs, the seat and a middle plate. I decided to remove both architrave and stretchers, and assemble the seat, middle plate directly to the legs.
Legs and seat are assembled in 'Arigumi', middle plate are done in 'Aikaki', which surprised me with the level of strength it creates. Also, hiding the 'Arigumi' solved the problem of deviating over time. It's such a pleasure when I come up with a new way after several trial and errors.
When you commit to every little detail, simple materials could add up to a grand appearance. I realize once again that God is in the details.
