椅子が最小限の生活空間とすると、ソファーは部屋と椅子の中間くらいのそれといえる。

 

たまには一日中ソファーの上だけで、寝たり食ったり、ビールを飲んでたまに本を読んだり、そんな怠惰な生活を送りたいと思ったのがisola sofaをデザインしたきっかけだ。

 

正面にドサっと座る、足を投げ出して横向きに座る、半身にもたれかかる、足を伸ばして寝るなどなど、どの体勢でも心地よくいられるようにとスケッチを描いていったら丸みのあるデザインに着地した。

また、簡単に取り外しや移動ができる大小のクッションも枕にしたり肘や足の下に置いたりと自由度が高く洗濯などのメンテナンス性も良い。

そして左右の肘掛けは、食事もできる大きなテーブルと、本やグラスを置くための小さなテーブルがアシンメトリーに広がっている。

 

「休日をダラダラ過ごすパーソナルで自由な空間」というコンセプトで、寝たり食ったりを一つ一つデザインしていったら、なんだか海にぽっかり浮かぶアイランドのような形になった。

If chair was the smallest living space for a person, sofa would be in between chairs and a room. 

Sometimes I want to spend a lazy day eating, sleeping, drinking beer and reading a little bit, all on the sofa. And that's how I came to design isola sofa.

 

Flopping down in the middle, sitting sideways with your legs up, leaning back on one side of the body, laying down with your legs stretched out. I sketched with all those positions in mind, so that you would feel comfortable in any way, and the design landed in a roundish shape.

The cushions in various sizes are all removable, so it could work as a pillow, or could be settled underneath your elbows or legs. Also the covers for these cushions are washable, which makes it easy for maintenance.

Armrests on both sides of the sofa are laid out asymmetrically, with a big table on one side, where you could have your meal on, and a smaller one to put your books and glasses on.

When I designed with the concept of "a personal and free space to spend my lazy day off " and included all the things I want to do, it somehow became a shape of an island floating in the sea.
